I often place slices of cucumber on my eyes if they feel tired or puffy. My one-year-old son went to his grandparents for tea and had them in stiches when he took two pieces of cucumber from his plate, put them on his eyes and laid back to relax! He takes a lot of persuading to actually try eating it.

Don't believe all those people who say being a grandparent is a joy. Take it from me, it is hellish. The older generation knows of the potential dangers lurking in the wings - but it is very difficult to draw the line between saying too much (and being accused of interfering) and saying too little (until it is too late) when it comes to the welfare of grandchildren. Worry is ever present because life's experiences teach us what can - and does - go wrong.

A fire destroyed the bistro at the 268-year-old Same Yet Inn in Prestwich, near Manchester, a pub which had long been thought to be haunted. The tenants found the bistro heavily damaged by the fire, except for one wall, which was unaffected. This was the spot were, some time earlier, they had found the outline of a man when they stripped off the wallpaper.

I'm fed up with the almost universal misuse of the word devastated. It means thoroughly destroyed, but now it is used to describe the effect of every little setback in life. When truly dreadful things happen to people, we have no words left to describe the true scale of real tragedy.
